Today, following our morning game drive and filling breakfast, we left Royal Malawane. We boarded a 12 seater Cessna Caravan plane back to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, the plane pulled over to the side of the runway. Our pilot turned around and informed us we had a flat tire! When we landed, the tire had popped. Almost immediately, two fire trucks and two fire and rescue pickups pulled up. We had to stay on the plane and wait for a long while before an airport bus picked us up. Our little plane closed an entire runway at the airport for over an hour! When the bus finally arrived, we exited one by one to make sure we did not have too much weight on the side with the flat tire. We and all our luggage boarded the bus and were towed back to the airport. This was also quite a process because we had to wait for planes to land and take-off before we could cross the other runway. Needless to say, we missed our connecting flight to Cape Town. Luckily, we got on a flight an hour later. That is where we are right now. Bubbi decided to upgrade us to business class since we had such a crazy travel day. I think this is one of the first times I will be like my mom and be a little nervous on the landing.
I am thankful we had such fantastic pilots today who landed the plane seemlessly despite a flat tire.
Added Note: We are at Cape Grace now, but are short one small bag. Bubbi's bag never made it from Johannesburg to Cape Town. They found it though and it should be here tomorrow morning.
