Simon's town is a small village and naval base near Cape Town. As we were nearing, we saw one of South Africa's two submarines going out to sea. Our guide told us the story of a great dane named Just Nuissance who is the only dog to have ever served in the Royal Army. He would follow the sailors on the train to Cape Town, but would be kicked off as soon as he was discovered on board. Eventually, the railroad company got mad and told his owner that Nuissance would either have to be put down or pay. Sailors had free train rides so the Royal Navy decided to make Nuissance a sailor so he could ride for free. He even had a proper Naval burial when he died.
From Simon's Town, we went down to Boulder's Beach where African penguins live. They have built fiberglass homes where the penguins can safely breed.
As we continued on our drive, we saw babboons along the side of the road. Two (a male and a female) were sitting at a look out spot and the female was pulling bugs/lice put of the male's fur and eating them.
We ended in Cape Point which is right at the south western tip of Africa. There are two lighthouses there. The water in one spot is perfectly turquoise. There were four ostriches on the beach, one male three female. As I was taking a picture of one of the females, it started walking toward me which totally freaked me out because ostriches are mean!
We stayed at the Cape Grace Hotel on the waterfront. It is a really beautiful hotel and our room overlooked the marina. The waterfront is a great area with lots of shopping and restaurants. My only problem was that the area could get a little fishy smelling.
We went to dinner that night with the couple that was in our 4x4 at Royal Malawane. They were on their
honeymoon and are from Thousand Oaks. The girl has worked in early childhood and is just finishing up the Educational Psychology masters program at CSUN (the one I hope to start in the next year).
I loved Cape Town and wish to spend more time there so I can explore the area more.
